Chef’s Series culinary competition showcases local chefs and homegrown foods
July 12, 2018
(SASKATOON, SK) Some of the most popular shows on television today showcase top chefs going head to head to create gourmet dishes from mystery ingredients. This year at Taste of Saskatchewan, festival-goers will have the chance to watch our own outstanding chefs face off in competitions that feature foods grown right here in Saskatchewan!
Each year, more than 100,000 people come to Kiwanis Memorial Park along the South Saskatchewan River to enjoy house favourites served up from almost thirty Saskatoon restaurants. This year, ‘A Taste of Saskatchewan’ will run from July 17-22.
Taste of Saskatchewan organizer SaskTel Centre has teamed up with Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan (FFC SK), a group that represents thousands of crop and livestock farmers, chefs and agriculture businesses in the province, to present the Farm & Food Care Chef’s Series on the Safeway Sobeys Stage.
Similar to the TV show Chopped! chefs will compete throughout the week using ‘black boxes’ filled with mystery ingredients grown in Saskatchewan. This year’s competition includes 12 local chefs who will face off throughout the week. Each day, different ingredients will be revealed in the black box for each show. Each competitor will have 45 minutes to create and serve one dish that uses all the black box ingredients. The winner moves onto the next round, with the final match-up for the title of “Top Chef Saskatchewan” on Sunday, July 22 at 12:30pm.
The Chef’s Series kicks off with a demonstration on the Safeway Sobeys Stage on Tuesday July 17 at 12:15. Chef Anthony McCarthy, Executive Chef of The Saskatoon Club will be coaching members of the Saskatoon Blades management team through an amazing cooking demonstration. Samples of their creations will be available in return for donations of cash or food tickets which will be presented to the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre. Poke Check, the Blades yeti mascot will also be onsite for photo ops and there are tons of games and prizes to be won.
Chef's Series competitions start at 4:00 pm on Tuesday and run daily at 12:15, 4:00 and 7:00 pm. Every show will include chances to win prizes, audience contests and lots of onstage excitement.
Organizers would like to thank all the sponsors of the Chef’s Series, including: Safeway Sobeys, French's, Cargill, Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan, Great Western Brewing, Prairie Pride Natural Foods, Saskatchewan Egg Producers, Turkey Farmers of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, SaskBarley and SaskCanola.
