SUMMARY:Teaming Up to Fund Public Trust: Stakeholder Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our farmers and researchers are developing new ways to meet the challenges of food security\, climate change\, food waste and others\, but will we be allowed to use and advance these technologies? \n\n\n\nNutrition warning labels on packaged meat\, fertilizer use limitations\, novel traits in new crop varieties… Policy-makers are increasingly considering more regulation and restriction in agriculture. These policy decisions arise from a lack of understanding and acceptance of modern agricultural science and practices. Meanwhile\, well-funded anti-agriculture groups are developing slick advertising campaigns to convince the public that agriculture is destructive and new technology is dangerous. \n\n\n\nIt has been said across the agricultural spectrum that what we need is to influence public perception and to help consumers understand farming and food\, yet funding for public trust works out to only 0.018% of farm cash receipts in 2020 in Saskatchewan alone. Many ag groups are doing what they can\, but few fund in large amounts because results are only achieved through long-term\, continued efforts that benefit the whole industry more often than specific players. \n\n\n\nMeet with others in the industry\n\n\n\nThis is not an issue that one organization can tackle on its own. What can we do\, within our own organizations and working together\, to amplify our efforts to build public trust in agriculture? \n\n\n\nFarm & Food Care Saskatchewan is coordinating a meeting of stakeholders on February 14\, 2023 (1PM to 4PM) to discuss how we can raise more dollars to tackle public trust in agriculture. Join us at the Delta Marriott Downtown Saskatoon to discuss ways of working together to achieve more. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Kathy Arney\, an expert in fund development\, capacity-building\, strategic development and campaign planning. \n\n\n\nRegister now

It builds on an earlier project of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan and Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan in which we were able to provide Saskatchewan-made lunches to almost 2000 students in Yorkton\, Lloydminster\, Prince Albert\, Regina and Saskatoon. We want to keep the energy going by extending this theme through Agriculture Month in October! \n\n\n\nOur Meals From the Farm theme is all about: \n\n\n\nCelebrating the great food produced by Saskatchewan farmersHighlighting the meals shared out in the field at harvest timeShowcasing community fall suppers featuring locally grown foodsSupporting meals in your community through support for organizations such as food banks\, soup kitchens and other community organizations\n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us on social media\, enter our photo contest\, make a donation\, or even plan an event or meal of your own to #CelebrateAg and #MealsFromtheFarm. \n\n\n\nAgriculture Month is proclaimed annually by the Government of Saskatchewan. Each October\, the industry works together to tell their food story through campaigns\, events and programming. Through these interactions\, we hope to help people better understand how Saskatchewan farmers and ranchers raise their animals and grow their crops\, while engaging in authentic conversations with people from around the province. \n\n\n\n\nCheck out our Ag Month activity page

SUMMARY:Cultivating Trust Conference
DESCRIPTION:Saskatoon\, SK\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2021: The Future of Food\n\n\n\nFarm & Food Care Saskatchewan is pleased to host an annual conference that brings people together from across the agriculture and food system each November. Several presentations are available for viewing from the 2021 conference. \n\n\n\nRecorded Presentations\nShawn Colborn: Welcome to Cultivating Trust\n\n\n\nWelcome & Opening Address – Presented by Shawn Colborn\, Chair of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan \n\n\n\nClinton Monchuk: Year in Review\n\n\n\nUnsettled times call for new approaches. Collaboration continues to be our key strategy for punching far above our weight. Learn how\, over the past year\, FFC SK has found new ways to deliver programs that meet and exceed our goals while reaching new audiences. \n\n\n\nYear in Review – Presented by Clinton Monchuk\, Executive Director of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan \n\n\n\nIan Affleck: The Un-Scary Truth About GMOs and Gene Editing\n\n\n\nMost everything you see on the grocery store shelves is a marvel of human innovation. The bananas of today look nothing like the inedible bananas that nature first created – thankfully! From the early days of agriculture through to modern-day where genetic engineering and gene editing are helping create crops that are more resilient to climate change\, more efficient and healthier\, we have been working with nature to create better food. How can we talk with consumers about how these technologies are helping improve food production – and how we know they are safe? \n\n\n\nUn-Scary Truth About GMOs and Gene Editing – Presented by Ian Affleck\, Vice-President of Plant Biotechnology\, CropLife Canada \n\n\n\nAlison Van Eenennaam: Genome Editing Opportunities in Livestock\n\n\n\nThe gene-editing technique CRISPR earned the 2020 Nobel Prize in chemistry. This tool offers an opportunity for geneticists to precisely introduce useful genetic alterations into animal breeding programs. Will breeders be able to use this technology\, or will it become politicized as happened with genetic engineering in certain crops? \n\n\n\nGenome Editing Opportunities in Livestock – Presented by Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam\, Cooperative Extension Specialist in Animal Genomics & Biotechnology\, University of California at Davis \n\n\n\nMatt Ridley: What Innovation Needs to Thrive\n\n\n\nInnovation is the main event of the modern age\, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process\, poorly understood by policy makers and businesses. Matt Ridley argues that we need to change the way we think about innovation. It’s not orderly or top-down or according to plan. It is incremental\, fortuitous and a direct result of the human habit of exchange. So what do we need to do to position ourselves for the future? \n\n\n\nPresented by Dr. Matt Ridley\, author\, journalist and policymaker – Northumberland\, UK \n\n\n\npresentation no longer available \n\n\n\nClinton Monchuk: Farm & Food Care Champion Award\n\n\n\nEach year\, Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan works with a selection panel to recognize a person who strives to engage consumers about agriculture and helps farmers to build public trust in our province and beyond. Join us as we reveal this year’s award recipient. \n\n\n\nFarm & Food Care Champion Award – Presented by Clinton Monchuk\, Executive Director of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan \n\n\n\nTiffany Martinka: What Have We Learned Today?\n\n\n\nA brief summary of the afternoon presentations – Presented by Tiffany Martinka\, farmer and past winner of the Farm & Food Care Champion Award \n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIan Affleck\n\n\n\nVice-President\, Plant Biotechnology – CropLife CanadaPresentation – The Un-Scary Truth About GMOs and Gene Editing \n\n\n\nIan Affleck is the vice-president of plant biotechnology for CropLife Canada. In this role\, Affleck works with domestic and international agricultural stakeholders and governments on the development of policies\, regulations\, and science related to plant biotechnology. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining CropLife Canada\, Affleck worked at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for 10 years. His work there focused on the regulation of novel plants and new varieties. \n\n\n\nAffleck holds a bachelor of science in agriculture from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College\, concentrating on agronomy and pest management. He also holds a master’s degree in agriculture from the University of Guelph\, specializing in horticulture and plant breeding. \n\n\n\nAffleck has been involved in agriculture from an early age\, having grown up on a potato farm in Bedeque\, Prince Edward Island. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlison Van Eenennaam\n\n\n\nCooperative Extension Specialist in Animal Genomics & Biotechnology – University of California\, DavisPresentation – Genome Editing Opportunities In Livestock \n\n\n\nDr. Alison Van Eenennaam is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in the field of Animal Genomics and Biotechnology in the Department of Animal Science at University of California\, Davis.
