Saskatchewan Open Farm Days

August 27, 2024

The inaugural Saskatchewan Open Farm Days was a huge success for Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan!

Saskatchewan Open Farm Days was organized to provide experiences around agriculture and food stories in the province. The three goals of the event included:

  1. Connect with local farmers and producers and engage the public about how food is produced.
  2. Discover the many local products and experience the diversity of farms operating in Saskatchewan.
  3. Create an environment for development of consistent agricultural and culinary tourism products.

This year, Open Farm Days occurred on August 10-11 with 36 different locations across Saskatchewan offering a unique experience of food and farming. The diversity of farms and events was unique in that individuals could choose how to spend their day. Enjoying morning pancakes from Sixteen Grains to having a glass of wine in the afternoon at Over the Hill Orchards & Winery gave participants a variety of different ways to interact with food producers. Bus tours also allowed participants to purchase a seat starting in Regina or Saskatoon to enjoy a variety of different farms on a one-day trip. It is estimated that a total of 3,000 individuals participated over the weekend.

Comments back from the event were positive:

  • “Please congratulate your team for organizing such a wonderful tour and providing a great experience!” – participant
  • “Definitely successful in a few different ways and we’re looking forward to next year already.” – host farmer

Based on survey results, 89% of visitors to the farms indicated they agreed/strongly agreed that Saskatchewan Open Farm Days improved their understanding and perception of agriculture in Saskatchewan. With respect to host farms, 88% expressed a positive experience and plan to participate in future events.

We would like to thank our partners for this event: Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan, SaskCanola, Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, Egg Farmers of Saskatchewan, SaskMilk, Sask Wheat, Viterra and Saskatchewan Pulse Growers.
